HIL Applied Medical harnesses patent-pending cutting-edge approaches to laser-based particle acceleration. These breakthroughs, developed by our team of internationally-acclaimed physicists, enable us to dramatically reduce the size, complexity and cost of a proton accelerator, thus becoming a key enabler of compact, cost-effective proton therapy facilites. Reduced shielding requirements also contribute to substantial reduction in facility footprint and building costs (which accont for over 25% of total facility price tag).
Nowadays there are only 9 operating proton therapy facilities in the US and 34 worldwide – in fact, existing facilities address only 2-5% of the clinical demand..
This is entirely due to prohibitively expensive construction ($150-250M) and annual operation (~$10M/year). These costs are attributed in large part to the large and expensive particle accelerators that are used in order to generate the high-energy proton beams.
The holy grail of proton therapy is therefore a compact, cost-effective solution that will enable the field to grow to its full potential. The market potential for HIL’s compact proton accelerators is in excess of $1.5BB/year.
