The Spheno-Palatine Ganglion (SPG) is a well known "nerve relay station" that regulate several important migraine "switches". Nonetheless, the SPG is located outside the brain, in an easy-to-access canal that lies above the hard palate in the mouth. Nonetheless, many of its nerves terminate on blood vessels of the brain, and therefore, SPG modulation can be considered as an excellent approach for selective extra cranial therapy of blood vessels in the brain .
Migraine is a chronic, debilitating condition characterized by sharp throbbing pain on one side of the head, nausea or vomiting, visual disturbances and/or sensitivity to noise and light. Approximately 30 million Americans suffer from migraines, in which 14 million suffer from frequent and/or severe migraine attacks. People with migraine have two treatment options available: acute medications, which are taken at the onset of an attack to treat the pain of a migraine, or preventive medications, which are taken daily to help prevent migraines before these start, so individuals can get fewer of them.
