The Company
Dorfour is a fabless semiconductor company that develops and markets chipsets for next generation cellular devices. Dorfour’s main target market is LTE ("Long Term Evolution") also known as Super 3G and 4G, which is the natural evolutionary path for 3G networks.
The Market
Operators are continuously seeking for ways to increase ARPU, and decrease the cost to deliver data. Increasing ARPU implies making new services such as Mobile TV, and High Definition Video Streaming, available to mainstream consumers. Decreasing the cost to deliver data implies higher network capacity. To support this, cellular operators, equipment manufacturers, and semiconductor companies, are realizing the need for higher data rates beyond that of HSxPA – which is the industry baseline for 3G networks. LTE provides data rate of 100Mbps.
LTE is an evolutionary standard supported by 3GPP and based on legacy 3G networks. It will offer significant performance enhancement, with respect to bandwidth, number of users per base-station, and cost of service delivery. It does not require operators to build a whole new network, therefore, it saves operators a multi-billion dollars write-off, which have been invested in legacy 3G networks. LTE is perceived as the cellular answer to Mobile WiMAX threat to the 3G data networks.
DoCoMo, Nokia, Ericsson, Texas Instruments, and other prominent value chain members project 2010 as the timeframe for early LTE deployment.
